Sirius, dog-star—
Gambol in the new year's light
Brighten all our skies.
I have been wanting to do a haiku on Canis Major (constellation) for AGES. I just now found the words for it on New years, :squee: This looks to be a promising start for the year.

Comments and Critiques are welcomed

Edit 1: I finally got a single long dash, properly known as an 'em dash' which is approx 4mm or 1/16 of an inch. Yes, I got bored and looked it up.

Thank you for bringing this piece, and your gallery, to my attention in the forum. It is a wonderful poem by a wonderful writer and as you know, I do have a soft spot for Eastern literature. I must inform you, however, that this is not a haiku as you have labelled it but in fact a senryu. I was first informed of the 5-7-5 rule being a 'misnomer' in English haiku by the wonderful deviant *Kneeling-Glory when uploading my own 'haiku' to deviantART; she kindly pointed me towards ~SOLARTS' Haiku Theory. If this is too long a read, you can read her original comment here. I hope this helps.

In regards to the content of the piece I was quite impressed, especially after reading of how this came to you in a single night after so long. It is particularly wonderful how inspiration can hit us in this way. Your juxtaposition of Sirius, dog-star– (and I am pleased to see your use of an em dash, as many deviants use - or -- and this is a slight pet peeve of mine) with how you have used both the scientific and informal name of the star was clever and interesting. To use the slang in the latter of the line and then continue with the imagery of young people frolicking on New Year's Eve was a lovely touch. It gave me that warm, 'fuzzy' feeling and continuing in the last line, evoked a lot of different emotions and imagery for me; fireworks, a party, the bright lights and naïve hope of new beginnings one can only truly experience on the 31st of December.

To recap, a truly lovely piece. It was clever, interesting, evocative and aesthetically lovely to read. I hope to see more like this in your gallery.
